    Non-Uniform Thickness Electroactive Device

    An electroactive device comprises at least two layers of material, wherein at least one layer is an electroactive material and wherein at least one layer is of non-uniform thickness. The device can be produced in various sizes, ranging from large structural actuators to microscale or nanoscale devices. The applied voltage to the device in combination with the non-uniform thickness of at least one of the layers (electroactive and/or non-electroactive) controls the contour of the actuated device. The effective electric field is a mathematical function of the local layer thickness. Therefore, the local strain and the local bending/ torsion curvature are also a mathematical function of the local thickness. Hence the thinnest portion of the actuator offers the largest bending and/or torsion response. Tailoring of the layer thicknesses can enable complex motions to be achieved

    Under conditions of starvation, Dictyostelium cells begin a programme of development during which they aggregate to form a multicellular structure by chemotaxis, guided by propagating waves of cyclic AMP that are relayed robustly from cell to cell. In this paper, we develop and analyse a new model for the intracellular and extracellular cAMP dependent processes that regulate Dictyostelium migration. The model allows, for the first time, a quantitative analysis of the dynamic interactions between calcium, IP(3) and G protein-dependent modules that are shown to be key to the generation of robust cAMP oscillations in Dictyostelium cells. The model provides a mechanistic explanation for the transient increase in cytosolic free Ca(2+) concentration seen in recent experiments with the application of the calmodulin inhibitor calmidazolium (R24571) to Dictyostelium cells, and also allows elucidation of the effects of varying both the conductivity of stretch-activated channels and the concentration of external phosphodiesterase on the oscillatory regime of an individual cell. A rigorous analysis of the robustness of the new model shows that interactions between the different modules significantly reduce the sensitivity of the resulting cAMP oscillations to variations in the kinetics of different Dictyostelium cells, an essential requirement for the generation of the spatially and temporally synchronised chemoattractant cAMP waves that guide Dictyostelium aggregation

    The Value of Xinjiang Class Education to Ethnic Minority Students, Their Families and Community: A Capability Approach

    In this article, the authors investigated how families of Xinjiang class students perceive the benefits of the Xinjiang class policy for students. Based on the work of Melanie Walker, the authors adopted the capability approach as an analytical tool and collected data through in-depth interviews with families of Xinjiang class students over three months of fieldwork in Xinjiang and eastern China. The authors obtained a list of seven functional capabilities that illuminate the value of Xinjiang class education, and complaints that need to be addressed in the future. The results demonstrate how the benefits of Xinjiang class education, from a familial perspective, accrue to students, their families, as well as to the wider community. Also, the findings reveal that agency of parents is limited in this educational process. The authors propose that a pretransition program and improved communication between parents and teachers would facilitate better outcomes for students and their families, and ultimately result in more effective implementation of Xinjiang class policy

    Spin-Orbit Coupling and Ion Displacements in Multiferroic TbMnO3

    The electronic and magnetic properties of TbMnO3 leading to its ferroelectric (FE) polarization were investigated on the basis of relativistic density functional theory (DFT) calculations. In agreement with experiment, we show that the spin-spiral plane of TbMnO3 can be either the bc- or ab-plane, but not the ac-plane. As for the mechanism of FE polarization, our work reveals that the "pure electronic" model by Katsura, Nagaosa and Balatsky (KNB) is inadequate in predicting the absolute direction of FE polarization. For the ab-plane spin-spiral state of TbMnO3, the direction of FE polarization predicted by the KNB model is opposite to that predicted by DFT calculations. In determining the magnitude and the absolute direction of FE polarization in spin-spiral states, it is found crucial to consider the displacements of the ions from their ecntrosymmetric positions

    A phylogenetic study of endo-beta-1,4-glucanase in higher termites

    Cellulose is the most abundant polymer in the world and termites are the most important metazoan cellulose processors. Termites are divided into lower and higher termites, with the latter being the most derived and most specious. Although termites are known for their ability to digest wood, members of the family Termitidae (higher termites) are nutritionally diverse in their use of cellulose. This study investigated the evolution of endogenous cellulases in 25 species of higher termites, using phylogenetic inferences from mitochondrial (16S) and nuclear (28S) ribosomal RNA and endo-β-1,4-glucanase sequences. The translated endo-β-1,4-glucanase amino acid order in all 41 sequences obtained showed high similarity to endo-β-1,4-glucanases in the glycosyl hydrolase family 9. The inferred endo-β-1,4-glucanase phylogenetic tree showed congruency with the mitochondrial/nuclear tree, with the fungus-growers being the most basal group and the soil/litter- and wood/lichen/grass/litter-feeders being the most distal diphyletic feeding groups. The bacterial comb-grower formed a separate clade from the fungus-growers and is sister groups with the soil/litter- and wood/lichen/grass/litter-feeders. There was also a strong diphyletic relationship between endo-β-1,4-glucanases of upper layer soil-feeders and the other soil-feeders. Within the monophyletic wood/lichen/grass/litter-feeding termites’ subclade, the nasutitermitines were polyphyletic and a strong diphyletic relationship was observed in the most distal lichen- and the grass/litter-feeders groups

    Is improvement in depression in patients attending cardiac rehabilitation with new-onset depressive symptoms determined by patient characteristics?

    BACKGROUND: Patients with cardiovascular disease (CVD) commonly experience depressive symptoms which is associated with adverse outcome and increased mortality. Examining the baseline characteristics of cardiac rehabilitation (CR) patients that determine Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) depression outcome may facilitate adjustments in CR programme delivery. This study aims to investigate whether comorbidities, demographic and clinical characteristics of patients, with new-onset post-cardiac event depressive symptoms, determine change in their depression following CR. METHODS: Analysing the routine practice data of British Heart Foundation National Audit of Cardiac Rehabilitation between April 2012 and March 2018, an observational study was conducted. Patients with new-onset post-cardiac event depressive symptoms and no previous documented history of depression constituted the study population. RESULTS: The analyses included 64 658 CR patients (66.24±10.69 years, 75% male) with new-onset HADS measures, excluding patients with a history of depression. The comorbidities determining reduced likelihood of improvement in depression outcomes after CR were angina, diabetes, stroke, emphysema and chronic back problems. In addition, higher total number of comorbidities, increased weight, a higher HADS anxiety score, smoking at baseline, physical inactivity, presence of heart failure and being single were other significant determinants. However, receiving coronary artery bypass graft treatment was associated with better improvement. CONCLUSION: The study identified specific baseline comorbid conditions of patients with new-onset depressive symptoms including angina, diabetes, stroke, emphysema and chronic back problems that were determinants of poorer mental health outcomes (HADS) following CR. Higher total number of comorbidities, increased weight, physical inactivity, smoking, presence of heart failure and being single were other determinants of a negative change in depression. These findings could help CR programmes focus on tailoring the CR intervention around comorbidity, physical activity status, weight management and smoking cessation in patients with new-onset depressive symptoms

    Polymeric blends for sensor and actuation dual functionality

    The invention described herein supplies a new class of electroactive polymeric blend materials which offer both sensing and actuation dual functionality. The blend comprises two components, one component having a sensing capability and the other component having an actuating capability. These components should be co-processable and coexisting in a phase separated blend system. Specifically, the materials are blends of a sensing component selected from the group consisting of ferroelectric, piezoelectric, pyroelectric and photoelectric polymers and an actuating component that responds to an electric field in terms of dimensional change. Said actuating component includes, but is not limited to, electrostrictive graft elastomers, dielectric electroactive elastomers, liquid crystal electroactive elastomers and field responsive polymeric gels. The sensor functionality and actuation functionality are designed by tailoring the relative fraction of the two components. The temperature dependence of the piezoelectric response and the mechanical toughness of the dual functional blends are also tailored by the composition adjustment

    Approaching the Ground State of Frustrated A-site Spinels: A Combined Magnetization and Polarized Neutron Scattering Study

    We re-investigate the magnetically frustrated, {\it diamond-lattice-antiferromagnet} spinels FeAl2_2O4_4 and MnAl2_2O4_4 using magnetization measurements and diffuse scattering of polarized neutrons. In FeAl2_2O4_4, macroscopic measurements evidence a "cusp" in zero field-cooled susceptibility around 13~K. Dynamic magnetic susceptibility and {\it memory effect} experiments provide results that do not conform with a canonical spin-glass scenario in this material. Through polarized neutron scattering studies, absence of long-range magnetic order down to 4~K is confirmed in FeAl2_2O4_4. By modeling the powder averaged differential magnetic neutron scattering cross-section, we estimate that the spin-spin correlations in this compound extend up to the third nearest-neighbour shell. The estimated value of the Land\'{e} gg factor points towards orbital contributions from Fe2+^{2+}. This is also supported by a Curie-Weiss analysis of the magnetic susceptibility. MnAl2_2O4_4, on the contrary, undergoes a magnetic phase transition into a long-range ordered state below \approx 40~K, which is confirmed by macroscopic measurements and polarized neutron diffraction. However, the polarized neutron studies reveal the existence of prominent spin-fluctuations co-existing with long-range antiferromagnetic order. The magnetic diffuse intensity suggests a similar short range order as in FeAl2_2O4_4. Results of the present work supports the importance of spin-spin correlations in understanding magnetic response of frustrated magnets like AA-site spinels which have predominant short-range spin correlations reminiscent of the "spin liquid" state.Comment: 10 pages, 10 figures, double-column, accepted in Phys.
